Cabal Referral System Spec v2

Overview

Two-sided referral program:

  • Referrer: 10% of referee's fees (lifetime)
  • Referee: 10% fee discount (0.9% instead of 1%, lifetime)

Referral code = Twitter username. Off-chain tracking, monthly manual payouts.

Fee Structure (Two-Sided, Protocol-Aware)

All fee rates are defined per-protocol in FEE_SCHEDULES (packages/fees/src/protocols.ts).

Jupiter (Solana)

User TypeFee RateBreakdown
Not referred1.0% (100 BPS)100% to treasury
Referred0.9% (90 BPS)80 BPS treasury + 10 BPS referrer

Hyperliquid Perps

User TypeFee RateBreakdown
Not referred0.05% (5 BPS)100% to builder wallet
Referred0.05% (5 BPS)4 BPS treasury + 1 BPS referrer

Hyperliquid Spot Sells

User TypeFee RateBreakdown
Not referred0.5% (50 BPS)100% to builder wallet
Referred0.5% (50 BPS)40 BPS treasury + 10 BPS referrer

DBC Pools

User TypeReferrer cut
Not referred100% to incubator wallet
Referred50% to referrer, 50% to incubator
Math example (Jupiter):
Referred user trades $1,000:
- Fee: 0.9% = $9 (user saves $1 vs non-referred)
- Treasury: $8 (88.9% of $9)
- Referrer: $1 (11.1% of $9 = 0.1% of volume)

Non-referred user trades $1,000:
- Fee: 1% = $10
- Treasury: $10

Referral Code Format

Code = Twitter username (lowercase, no @)

Examples:

  • @CryptoWhale → referral code: cryptowhale
  • @degen_trader_69 → referral code: degen_trader_69

Why Twitter username:

  • Memorable and shareable
  • No extra code generation needed
  • Verifiable (we already have Twitter OAuth)
  • Natural for viral sharing ("use my code: mycryptobot")

Public vs Private Data

No auth on website. Data split between public profile and private API.

✓ Wallet generated: 7xK9...3mNp
✓ Deposit SOL to start trading

Your agent is ready! Run `cabal start` to begin.

Flow 4: Referrer Checks Stats (via OpenClaw/API)

You: "show my cabal referral stats"

OpenClaw: Your Cabal Referral Stats

Referral link: cabal.trading/ref/myagent
Referred agents: 12 (8 active this month)
Their total volume: $45,230

Earnings
All-time: $4.52 (0.1% of referee volume)
Pending payout: $2.15
Next payout: Feb 1, 2026

Payout wallet: 7xK9...3mNp

Flow 5: Referrer Updates Payout Wallet (via OpenClaw/API)

You: "set my cabal payout wallet to ABC123..."

OpenClaw: Payout wallet updated to ABC123...
Your next referral payout will be sent there.

URL Structure

OpenClaw Skill Commands

Add these to the Cabal skill for OpenClaw:

Check Referral Stats

User: "show my cabal referrals" / "cabal referral stats" / "/referrals"
→ GET /api/v1/me/referrals (with API key)

Response format:
Your Cabal Referral Stats

Referral link: cabal.trading/ref/{username}
Referred agents: {count} ({active} active this month)
Their total volume: ${volume}

Earnings
All-time earned: ${total_earned}
Pending payout: ${pending}
Already paid out: ${paid_out}
Next payout: {date}

Payout wallet: {wallet}
Use "set cabal payout wallet to <address>" to change.

Set Payout Wallet

User: "set my cabal payout wallet to ABC123..."
→ PUT /api/v1/me/referrals/payout-wallet (with API key)

Response: Payout wallet updated to ABC123...

Check Payout History

User: "show my cabal payout history"
→ GET /api/v1/me/referrals/payouts (with API key)

Response:
Payout History

Jan 2026: $2.37 → 7xK9...3mNp (tx: abc123...)
Dec 2025: $1.85 → 7xK9...3mNp (tx: def456...)

Total paid: $4.22

Database Schema

User table columns (on user):

  • referred_by UUID — FK to referrer's user.id
  • referral_code TEXT UNIQUE — twitter username lowercase
  • referral_payout_wallet TEXT — defaults to agent's main wallet
  • fee_discount NUMERIC — 0.1 = 10% discount

dbc_fee_claims — DBC partner fee claim events

CREATE TABLE dbc_fee_claims (
  id UUID PRIMARY KEY DEFAULT gen_random_uuid(),
  pool_address TEXT NOT NULL,
  agent_id UUID NOT NULL REFERENCES user(id),
  referrer_id UUID REFERENCES user(id),
  claim_tx_signature TEXT,
  base_fee_lamports TEXT NOT NULL,
  quote_fee_lamports TEXT NOT NULL,
  sol_price DOUBLE PRECISION NOT NULL,
  fee_usd DOUBLE PRECISION NOT NULL,
  earned_usd DOUBLE PRECISION NOT NULL,
  referrer_share_rate DOUBLE PRECISION NOT NULL DEFAULT 0.5,
  config_address TEXT,
  claimed_at TIMESTAMPTZ DEFAULT NOW() NOT NULL
);

Populated by scripts/claim-dbc-fees.ts. Each row = one on-chain fee claim from a Meteora DBC pool.

referral_earnings_mv — Materialized view

Derives referral earnings from trades (Jupiter/HL platform fees) and dbc_fee_claims (DBC partner fees). Not a table — refreshed concurrently by the indexer cron every 5-10 minutes.

-- Columns: referrer_id, referee_id, source, total_volume_usd, total_fees_generated, total_earned
-- Sources: chain name from trades (solana, hyperliquid) + 'dbc_pool' from dbc_fee_claims
-- Unique index on (referrer_id, referee_id, source) for concurrent refresh

referral_payouts — Payout history

CREATE TABLE referral_payouts (
  id UUID PRIMARY KEY DEFAULT gen_random_uuid(),
  "referrerId" UUID NOT NULL REFERENCES user(id),
  amount DOUBLE PRECISION NOT NULL,
  currency TEXT DEFAULT 'SOL',
  "txSignature" TEXT, -- unique where not null (prevents duplicate payouts)
  "payoutWallet" TEXT NOT NULL,
  status TEXT DEFAULT 'pending',
  "periodStart" DATE,
  "periodEnd" DATE,
  "createdAt" TIMESTAMPTZ DEFAULT NOW() NOT NULL,
  "completedAt" TIMESTAMPTZ
);
-- Unique index on "txSignature" WHERE "txSignature" IS NOT NULL

Pending balance = SUM(referral_earnings_mv.total_earned) - SUM(referral_payouts.amount). Process-payout uses an atomic CTE to prevent double-payout race conditions.

Double-Dip Earning Sources

Referrers earn from two independent revenue streams for each referred agent:

SourceRateMechanism
Jupiter platform fees10 BPS (0.1%) of trade volumeOn-chain feeAccount to SQUADS_VAULT_ADDRESS. Derived from trades table in referral_earnings_mv.
HL perps platform fees1 BPS (0.01%) of trade volumeOff-chain via builder fee. Derived from trades table in referral_earnings_mv.
HL spot sell platform fees10 BPS (0.1%) of trade volumeOff-chain via builder fee. Derived from trades table in referral_earnings_mv.
DBC partner pool fees50% of claimed partner shareClaimed to incubator wallet via scripts/claim-dbc-fees.ts. Recorded in dbc_fee_claims.

All rates are defined per-protocol in FEE_SCHEDULES (packages/fees/src/protocols.ts). Both trade-based and DBC sources aggregate into referral_earnings_mv (materialized view), refreshed by the indexer cron. The constant DBC_REFERRER_SHARE_RATE (0.5) is exported from @cabal/fees.

Example: A referred agent trades $10,000 on Jupiter AND their token pool generates 0.5 SOL in DBC partner fees:

  • Jupiter: referrer earns $10 (0.1% of volume)
  • DBC: referrer earns ~$37.50 (50% of 0.5 SOL at $150/SOL)
  • Total: ~$47.50 from one agent

Fee Split Logic (Updated for Two-Sided)

Per-Trade Referral Tracking

Each trade now stores referral attribution directly:

-- trades table columns (added)
referrer_id UUID REFERENCES user(id), -- who gets the referral reward
referrer_fee_bps INTEGER, -- BPS allocated to referrer (typically 10)
treasury_fee_bps INTEGER, -- BPS allocated to treasury (typically 80)
-- Index: idx_trades_referrer_id ON trades(referrer_id)

All three columns are nullable — existing trades lack this data, non-referred trades have no referrer.

At trade time, calculateFees(db, agentId) returns { effectiveFeeBps, referrerRewardBps, treasuryFeeBps, referrerId }. These are persisted on each trade row in both the Solana trade path and the Hyperliquid recordHLFill() path.

Matview (Dual-Path Query)

The referral_earnings_mv materialized view uses per-trade data when available, falling back to the legacy 0.1% estimate for older trades:

  1. New path: Trades with referrer_id IS NOT NULL — uses referrer_fee_bps / 10000.0 for exact earnings
  2. Legacy path: Trades where referrer_id IS NULL but user.referredBy IS NOT NULL — uses hardcoded 0.001 (0.1%)
  3. DBC pool claims: From dbc_fee_claims table (unchanged)

The matview is refreshed by the indexer cron every 5-10 minutes.

Fee Calculation

Fee calculation at trade time (packages/fees/src/calculate.ts:calculateFees):

  • Protocol-aware: calculateFees(db, agentId, protocol) where protocol is 'jupiter', 'hl-perps', 'hl-spot-sell', 'hl-spot-buy', or 'dbc'
  • Jupiter: non-referred pay 1% (100 BPS) — all to treasury; referred pay 0.9% (90 BPS) — 80 BPS treasury + 10 BPS referrer
  • HL perps: 5 BPS total, referrer gets 1 BPS
  • HL spot sells: 50 BPS total, referrer gets 10 BPS
  • HL spot buys: 0 BPS (no fee, no referral)
  • Fee is applied on-chain (Jupiter) or via builder fee (HL); referral info is persisted on the trade row

DBC Pool Fees: Claimed via scripts/claim-dbc-fees.ts, which reads unclaimed Meteora partner fees, signs claim txs via Privy, and records each claim via recordDbcFeeClaim() from @cabal/fees/dbc with the referrer share rate and config address.

Fee breakdown:
VolumeNot ReferredReferred
$1,000$10 fee → $10 treasury$9 fee → $8 treasury + $1 referrer
$10,000$100 fee → $100 treasury$90 fee → $80 treasury + $10 referrer

Gaming Detection

The admin referral signals endpoint (/api/v1/admin/referrals/:referrerId/signals) runs four SQL-based checks with no external dependencies:

SignalTriggerSeverity
Volume concentration>80% of earnings from single refereemedium (>80%), high (>95%)
Rapid signup clustering3+ referees created within 1 hourmedium (3-4), high (5+)
Inactive referees>50% of referees have 0 tradesmedium (50-80%), high (>80%)
Tiny trade patternAverage trade value across referees < $1medium (<$1), high (<$0.10)

Overall risk: low (no signals), medium (1 medium signal), high (any high signal OR 2+ medium signals).

All signals include evidence with numeric details for admin review. The admin UI shows these inline when expanding a referrer row.

Admin Referral Management UI

Located at /admin/referrals. Requires admin auth (same pattern as /admin).

Three sections:
  1. Stats grid (top) — 6 cards: Total Referrers, Total Referees, Total Volume, Total Earned, Total Paid, Total Pending

  2. Referrer table (main) — Top 20 referrers sorted by pending amount. Click to expand:

    • Per-source earnings breakdown (Solana / Hyperliquid / DBC Pool)
    • Gaming signals panel (fetched on expand)
    • Paginated per-trade detail table
    • "Mark Paid" action — paste tx signature, confirm amount
  3. Agent dashboard — ReferralsTab includes:

    • Payout wallet management (set/update Solana address)
    • Per-source earnings breakdown
    • Referral link, stats, referee list, payout history (pre-existing)

Payout Process

Schedule: Monthly, 1st of each month

Minimum threshold: $5 (or ~0.02 SOL equivalent)

  • Below threshold: rolls over to next month
  • Prevents dust payouts and transaction fee waste

Process:

1. [Automated] Cron job on 1st of month generates payout report
   - Lists all referrers with pending >= $5
   - Calculates SOL equivalent at current price
   - Creates draft payouts in 'pending' status

2. [Manual] Admin reviews payout report
   - Sanity check: any suspicious spikes?
   - Verify wallet addresses are valid
   - Approve batch

3. [Semi-automated] Run payout script
   - Script reads approved payouts
   - Sends SOL from treasury to each payout wallet
   - Records tx_signature for each
   - Updates status to 'completed'

4. [Automated] Notify referrers (via OpenClaw if connected)
   - "Your referral payout of X SOL has been sent"
   - Include tx signature for verification

Payout Script (run manually after review):

// scripts/process-referral-payouts.ts
async function processPayouts() {
  const pendingPayouts = await db.query(`
    SELECT rp.*, b.referral_payout_wallet
    FROM referral_payouts rp
    JOIN bots b ON rp.referrer_id = b.id
    WHERE rp.status = 'approved'
  `);

  for (const payout of pendingPayouts) {
    try {
      const tx = await sendSol(
        TREASURY_WALLET,
        payout.referral_payout_wallet,
        payout.amount
      );

      await db.query(`
        UPDATE referral_payouts
        SET status = 'completed', tx_signature = $1, completed_at = NOW()
        WHERE id = $2
      `, [tx.signature, payout.id]);

      console.log(`Paid ${payout.amount} SOL to ${payout.referral_payout_wallet}`);
    } catch (error) {
      await db.query(`
        UPDATE referral_payouts SET status = 'failed' WHERE id = $1
      `, [payout.id]);
      console.error(`Failed: ${payout.id}`, error);
    }
  }

1. Referrer deletes their agent

  • Referral link stops working (404 or "agent not found")
  • Existing referrals stay linked (historical data preserved)
  • Pending payouts still sent to their last payout wallet

2. Referee was already registered, then clicks ref link

  • No retroactive attribution
  • Referral only counts at registration time
  • Could show: "You already have an agent. Referral codes only work for new signups."

3. Invalid referral code in CLI

$ cabal init --ref=doesnotexist

Warning: Referral code 'doesnotexist' not found. Continuing without referral.
   You won't get the 10% fee discount.
  • Don't block registration, just skip the referral + discount

4. Referrer refers themselves (same Twitter account)

  • Prevented: referred_by cannot equal own id
  • CLI/API should reject if ref code matches registering user's Twitter

5. Referral code changes (user changes Twitter username)

  • Referral code is set at Twitter verification time
  • If they change Twitter username later, old code still works
  • Could add skill command: "update my cabal referral code"

Analytics to Track

-- Referral funnel
SELECT
  COUNT(*) as link_visits, -- From web analytics
  COUNT(DISTINCT referred_by) as signups_with_ref,
  COUNT(CASE WHEN has_deposited THEN 1 END) as deposited,
  COUNT(CASE WHEN has_traded THEN 1 END) as traded
FROM bots
WHERE referred_by IS NOT NULL;

-- Top referrers (admin only)
SELECT
  b.twitter_username,
  COUNT(re.referred_id) as referrals,
  SUM(re.total_volume) as total_volume,
  SUM(re.total_earned) as total_earned
FROM bots b
JOIN referral_earnings re ON b.id = re.referrer_id
GROUP BY b.id
ORDER BY total_earned DESC
LIMIT 20;

-- Referral conversion rate
SELECT
  DATE_TRUNC('week', created_at) as week,
  COUNT(*) as total_signups,
  COUNT(referred_by) as referred_signups,
  ROUND(COUNT(referred_by)::numeric / COUNT(*) * 100, 1) as ref_rate
FROM bots
GROUP BY 1
ORDER BY 1 DESC;

-- Fee discount impact
SELECT
  CASE WHEN fee_discount > 0 THEN 'referred' ELSE 'organic' END as user_type,
  COUNT(*) as users,
  SUM(total_volume) as volume,
  SUM(total_fees_paid) as fees
FROM bots
GROUP BY 1;

Frontend Components Needed

  1. <ReferralBanner /> - Shows "Referred by @username + 10% off" on homepage
  2. <InstallCommand ref={code} /> - Copyable command with optional ref
  3. <ProfileReferralSection /> - Public referral stats on profile page (count + volume only)
  4. <ReferralLinkCard /> - Copyable referral link on profile page
NOT needed (stats via API/skill instead):
  • <ReferralDashboard /> → Use OpenClaw skill
  • <PayoutHistory /> → Use OpenClaw skill

Skill File Updates

Add to SKILL.md for Cabal:

## Referral Commands

### Check your referral stats
"show my cabal referrals" / "cabal referral stats"
→ Shows your referral link, count, volume, earnings, and pending payout

### Set payout wallet
"set my cabal payout wallet to `<address>`"
→ Updates where your referral earnings are sent

### Check payout history
"show my cabal payout history"
→ Lists all past referral payouts with transaction links

Launch Checklist

  • Database migrations for referral tables + fee_discount column
  • API endpoints (public profile stats + authenticated earnings)
  • Per-trade referral tracking (referrer_id, referrer_fee_bps, treasury_fee_bps on trades)
  • Matview dual-path query (per-trade BPS + legacy 0.1% fallback)
  • Solana + Hyperliquid trade routes persist referral info
  • Admin referral management page (/admin/referrals)
  • Gaming detection signals (volume concentration, rapid signup, inactive referees, tiny trades)
  • Admin per-trade drill-down and manual payout workflow
  • Agent dashboard: payout wallet management + per-source breakdown
  • CLI update: --ref flag support, show fee discount on registration
  • Homepage: dynamic ref code injection from URL + "10% off" messaging
  • Agent profile page: public referral section (count + volume)
  • OpenClaw skill: referral commands (stats, set wallet, payout history)
  • Payout script + cron job for monthly report
  • Analytics tracking
  • DBC pool migration support (see GitHub issue #67)

Future Enhancements (V2)

  • Tiered rewards: Volume-based tiers (10% base, 15% at $10k+, 20% at $50k+)
  • Public leaderboard: Top referrers (opt-in, shows earnings)
  • Referral NFTs: Special badge for top referrers
  • Instant payouts: When pending > $50, allow manual claim via skill
  • Multi-level: Level 2 referrals (2% of your referrals' referrals)

Future Improvements

DBC Referral Fees (4-Phase Plan)

Affiliates currently earn from Jupiter/HL trade fees only. They should also earn from Meteora DBC pool trading fees when someone trades their referred agent's token on the bonding curve.

  • Phase 1 — Fee claiming infrastructure: Add claimPartnerTradingFee() wrapper, create claiming script/service that iterates all DBC pools, store claimed amounts per pool, schedule as cron or reconciler task
  • Phase 2 — Pool to agent to referrer attribution: Link every DBC pool to an agent via agent_tokens.poolAddress, look up agent's referredBy to find referrer, credit 100% of claimed partner fees to referrer in referral_earnings
  • Phase 3 — Indexer integration: Extend indexer to track DBC pool trades (buy/sell events on bonding curve), record trade volume per pool, surface DBC fee earnings in GET /api/v1/me/referrals
  • Phase 4 — Admin visibility: Show DBC referral earnings in admin payout queue alongside Jupiter earnings, add pool fee breakdown to admin agent detail view

Advanced Referral Features

  • Tiered rewards: higher volume = higher referrer percentage
  • Public referral leaderboard
  • Instant payout option when pending balance exceeds $50
  • Email notifications for referral payouts

Known Issues

  • Payout processing is entirely manual. Admin must send SOL separately via Squads, then paste the tx signature into the admin UI. No automated on-chain sending.
  • No backfill for legacy trades. Existing trades before per-trade tracking don't have referrer_id populated. The materialized view falls back to user.referredBy join with a fixed 0.1% rate.
  • Edge cases not handled: Deleted or suspended referrer behavior is undefined. Referral code format is not validated beyond existence check.
